Our Town

"It goes so fast. We don't have time to look at one another. I didn't realize. So all that was going on and we never noticed. Take me back -- up the hill -- to my grave. But first: Wait! One more look. Good-bye , Good-bye world. Good-bye, Grover's Corners....Mama and Papa. Good-bye to clocks ticking....and Mama's sunflowers. And food and coffee. And new ironed dresses and hot baths....and sleeping and waking up. Oh, earth, you are too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it -- every, every minute?"

This was one of my favorite plays to do, I think, though I hated how depressing it was at the time. It seems appropriate that, given I did it freshman year of High School (a million years ago, and wasn't I a baby?!?), most of it has faded from my mind. That quote, though: I recognized it right away. :)

I find having someone I love to remember my life alongside me, someone to tell me stories about what we did (from his point of view) and in return I tell him what I remember, helps to keep me mindful of life passing. Not being a saint nor a poet, I am notorious for not having much perspective, time-wise: I exist almost all in the general present and hardly remember/think of the past or future. PDAs help of course, but you'll understand that I'm not surprised when I look around and find a year or two has passed, or that some event is right on top of me.

"My, wasn't life awful - and wonderful."
